What is a veterinary specialist?

A veterinary specialist is a veterinarian who has completed at least 3-4 years of post-graduate training in a specific field.

An internship and residency programme are undertaken under close supervision at approved specialist centres where skills are honed by dealing with hundreds of challenging cases. Publication of peer-reviewed papers and completion of a research project are required and lectures must be presented to a scientific audience.

Success must be achieved in an arduous exam process before the title “Specialist” may be used.

Not all referral surgeons are board certified specialists. At VetSOS and Vetspecs you can rest assured you are receiving the highest level of service and care through our board certified veterinary specialists.

Why see a veterinary specialist?

Your family veterinarian provides the primary and daily care for your pet. However, as in human medicine, there are some cases that require advanced skills, expertise and equipment to provide the best possible surgical treatments.

Vetspecs and VetSOS offer collaborative teams of small animal specialists in surgery. We are part of a national and international network of specialists 100% dedicated to providing the next level of care for your pet.

Our specialist teams are committed to ensuring that you and your pet are treated with the utmost compassion and care. We are pet owners too and understand the importance of the bond between you and your companion.
